eBike Technology

Choosing The Right Powered Electric Motor

For many folks, eBike technology can be confusing. While we have seen countless automotive advertisements heralding horsepower, the inner workings of electric transportation are mainly foreign to us.  Watts up with that?!?

While your car can have a four cylinder gas or a six cylinder deisel engine, eBikes can have one of three types of motor systems: Hub Motor, Mid-Drive Motor or Friction Roller.

eBike throttles differ from cars in that nearly all cars have the same foot pedal throttle system, whereas eBikes can have either a motorcycle-like twist throttle or simply come on when you pedal via a system that is called 'Pedal-Assist.'

Lastly, just like there are many different types of gasoline, there are all sorts of different types of eBike batteries.  In this section, we are going to begin dicussing eBike motor, throttle and battery systems to help you determine if an eBike might be a good fit for your lifestyle.

eBike Motors

Hub Motors

Because they require less engineering, are easy to maintain and cost efficient, 95% of all eBikes use a hub motor system.  The motors, which can be found in the center (or hub) of the front or back wheel.  When pedalling without electricity, some motors will create a slight drag while other motors won't.

eBike Throttles

If your car has cruise control, then your car's throttle system is similar to the types of throttles available to eBikes.

Pedal-Assist

Like cruise control, pedal assist systems are very intuitive.  When turned, on, the bike sensors detect your pedalling and the motor assists you.
