It feels like a normal bike shop. It looks like a normal bike shop. But Wakefield Gregg’s new E-Bike Store is unlike any other bike shop in Portland.

Wakefiled Gregg, a George Fox MBA student, in his bike shopGregg, a George Fox MBA student, sells electric bicycles, and his is one of about 15 businesses across the country to do so. Although his store has the typical, laid- back feel of a friendly Portland bike hangout, it’s with a twist.

Wake Gregg’s bike shop is a shining example of sustainable living. Although you wouldn’t know it, the racks, the lighting, shelving units – even the coffee maker – were all purchased second hand.  And the products he sells – electric bicycles – are about the most efficient form of motorized transportation that exists. Although they look nearly identical to their non-motorized counterparts, the electric bikes at The E-Bike Store, located at the corner of Alberta Street and Vancouver Avenue, can take you longer and faster for a fraction of the effort.

Opening a new retail business in the midst of an historic economic downturn isn’t exactly a safe bet, especially when there’s not a very big existing market for your product. But that didn’t stop Wake Gregg from opening Portland’s first all-electric bicycle store, The eBike Store (201 N. Alberta), last week.
